Hot Coals Only

As I mentioned last week, I was at a conference in San Diego last week:
So, while Stacy, her mother, and Moshe were out enjoying the weather, I spent my days here:
At least the hotel room had a good view.  There were two aircraft carriers (Nimitz and Carl Vinson) parked across the bay.  Here's the Carl Vinson and some support ship:

But you could also see across the bay, and the distant Cabrillo National Monument (which we visited the day we left).
You can just make out our hotel across the bay, and, yes, that is a submarine.

I was able to have a little fun, though.  Stacy and I rented a convertible, and drove up the coast:

Finally, some of you may recall Yoni/Jonathan's series [1, 2] on "No Hot Ashes."  Well, I noticed these nifty receptacles on the beaches of La Jolla inscribed with the opposite message:
And, if you look closely you can make out some surfers in the water.

The search for "No Hot Ashes"

Many of you may remember my hobby that is to find garbage cans which say "No Hot Ashes" in different languages all over the world.
While this particular garbage can in Israel does not quite merit inclusion into my geotagged No Hot Ashes flikr pool, it does get an honorable mention. The words on the right side of the front face of this bin says something like "Don't Start Fires Inside" which is slightly different than "No Hot Ashes" which was explicitely stated in French German and Spanish.

Here is a picture from the Newark Airport

And some more pictures below from the flight to Israel:

No Hot Ashes

To combat the cross-cultural urge to throw Hot Ashes in with the garbage, trash cans worldwide are prominently labeled "No Hot Ashes" in the native language.
As per Eli's suggestion, I started a Flikr photo group to find out exactly how widespread this phenomenon is.
So far I have seen them in the US, England, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Spain
and in English, French, German and Spanish

Check it out at http://www.flickr.com/groups/nohotashes and if you can add some photos! (I don't have any yet from the US).

By the way, the group right now isn't working quite right so you'll actually need to join in order to see all the pictures.

France

Strasbourg is quite close to the border with Germany.

Germany has another one of these on their side with a guy walking . . . apparently the French one has been severely vandalized on many occasions. The Nazis did some scary stuff to the regular citzens of this city.

On the way to Paris, classic.

10 points for guessing where this is.

The tower is the Eiffel Tower.

And as a hint of more to come, this garbage can from Montepliers says "no hot ashes."
