More Mail

Last November I took a chain mail class.  After that class I began to joke about making a kippah out of chain mail.  People seemed to think that this was a cool idea.  So I decided to do it.
It contains just over 700 rings and weighs in at a quarter pound.  At some point I will buy more of the blue rings and extend the blue section a little more which will bring the total to either about 800 or 900 based upon if I do one or two more layers.

  1. You forgot to report an important metric: How much does it weigh?

  2. Eli I have no idea what you are talking about, it clearly states that it weighs a quarter pound.

  3. Actually, I put that in after you reminded me and then acted as if it was there the whole time.

  4. Boo! Here I was thinking I need to retake some "reading comprehension" course or something...

  5. I have to know: does it sink into your hair over time? Would a short person behind you wonder "what is up with that perfectly symmetrical bald spot?"

  6. Well mb I actually have it have it attached to a crocheted kippah. This keeps it on better and prevents it from sinking into my hair.

  7. Have you actually worn this to services? Strange looks from the rabbi?

I'm a blacksmith, and a maillecrafter friend recently offered to make me one, and found your post here via google. yay.

Just wondering what the general reaction's been, if you've been wearing it routinely. I have some thin split leather handy I could line mine with to give it a bit of traction - think that'd work O.K.?

    1. I have worn it to services. I got strange looks from many people, most of whom never came over to ask me about it, just spent large amounts of time staring at my head. Overall people think it is awesome. I think attaching it to some thing split leather would work great, I attached mine to a crocheted kippah, it keeps it on and keeps it from eating my hair.

    2. Ouch, yeah, I've lost more than a few hairs on my knuckles with woven wire gloves... thanks for the heads up!
